Follow Jaiden, along with some family and friends, through the alphabet and learn more about Autism along the way!
Each "Autism Through The Alphabet" Flashcard showcases a vivid illustration, a key term, and a relatable scenario that goes beyond traditional learning tools to creatively teach more about Autism. Unlike standard flashcards, which are often limited to teaching basic educational concepts like the alphabet, sight words, and emotions, our Flashcards provide a creative and comprehensive approach to Autism understanding. They introduce young learners to a wide spectrum of autistic experiences while integrating social-emotional learning, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills. By incorporating these essential elements, this holistic method not only enriches the educational experience, but also fosters more inclusive, supportive, and compassionate spaces for all children to learn, grow, and thrive.
Emphasis on representation of black autistic youth and their families: We recognize the importance of diverse representation and address the underrepresentation of black autistic children and their families within the Autism awareness space by intentionally creating inclusive educational resources that feature diverse characters, making sure they feel acknowledged, seen, and included.
Designed to humanize Autism: By depicting individuals on the Autism spectrum with a range of emotions, thoughts, and interests, we are breaking stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding Autism. We understand that behind every Autism diagnosis lies an individual with their own unique qualities, strengths, challenges, and aspirations deserving of respect, kindness, and acceptance.
Who Can Use Our Flashcards
Neurodivergent and neurotypical youth, parents, caregivers, educators, special education therapists, and anyone who wants to better understand some general and common Autism experiences or learn better ways to support autistic children can use these Flashcards. If an autistic child can find at least one Flashcard with an experience that they can personally connect to or that can teach them something new about Autism, then they can feel seen and supported in a world that often makes those in the Autism Community feel overlooked or underrepresented.
They also help provide a foundation for autistic children to learn more about themselves and encourage them to build a positive self-identity, which opens the door for them to become self-advocates, which comes from self-understanding, self-awareness, and self-confidence.
Siblings and classmates of autistic children can use these Flashcards to learn more about their autistic sibling or classmate and better understand why they do some of the things that they do. Our Flashcards can help answer questions for them like:
- “Why does a parent have to stick to a certain routine for that sibling?”
- “Why is this classmate only repeating certain words or phrases they hear?”
- “Why doesn’t my sibling/classmate speak?”
- “Why do they always seem to line up their toys?”
- “Why do they flap their hands or make that sound randomly?
They may have heard the answer before, but now they have a better understanding of what it is through a visual aid and a written example spoken mostly from the perspective of another child who has Autism. This encourages neurotypical children to step into the shoes of neurodivergent children by exploring their experiences and emotions, which emphasizes the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL). We want them to know that these actions aren’t bad and shouldn’t be judged, they’re just different.
How To Use Our Flashcards: Fun and Creative Ways to Learn!
1. Interactive Prompts: Some of our Flashcards with interactive prompts that make learning fun! For example, the Letter F Flashcard, which stands for Focus, includes a belly-breathing exercise. Practice this together to help kids regain focus, bring some calm, and integrate mindfulness into their routine.
2. Memory Game Madness: Transform learning into a game with our Flashcards! Play a “words of the day” challenge to test your memory and connect with the content by either selecting a few cards at a time or going all out with the full deck of 27 cards. Flip them over so only the letters show, then provide a description or quote from a card and have players guess the term. For example, with the Letter C Flashcard (Communication), you might say, “This can be different for everyone. Some people can speak, some can’t, and both are okay.”
Bonus: If playing with a small group, track how many terms players guess correctly. At the end of the game, celebrate the top guesser with a small prize or special reward to add an extra layer of excitement and motivation to the learning experience. And remember, even if someone only guessed one correctly, they're making great progress in understanding Autism. Encourage and celebrate their effort and learning journey!
3. Real-Life Helper: Keep our Flashcards handy for those “teachable moments” in real life. Whether you’re at home, school, or traveling, our flashcards are perfect for explaining Autism concepts in everyday scenarios. For instance, if you’re around a child who stims frequently and others are curious, pull out the Letter S Flashcard for Stimming. It’s a great way to explain and promote understanding and support with a simple, easy-to-read description!
